3  -  Rock Art of Amazonia.

Amazonia disposes of an enormous potential for studying Rock Art. Actually, however,
there is little archaeological research done which focuses on this kind of cultural manifestation left by the ancient inhabitants of the region. The lack of interest for this type of research is recent, if you take into consideration that various studies were accomplished at the end of the 19th  and in the beginning of the 20th century. The concern for other archaeological evidence in Amazonia, especially pottery, created a big void with reference to Rock Art, its technical and stylistic features as well as to its archaeological context.

Recent studies in various Amazonian countries have contributed to a change of the situation. This session has the objective of presenting an updated survey of research realized in the region, opening a discussion on subjects such as Rock Art and its archaeological context, cultural sequences, chronology, ethnography, mythology and the interpretation for Rock Art given by the present-day inhabitants.

The session also opens space for the presentation of inventories and for debates on problems resulting from that kind of tourism that is not organized and occurs in the entire region.

3 - Arte rupestre da Amazônia.

A Amazônia possui um enorme potencial para estudos de arte rupestre. No entanto, ainda são poucas as pesquisas arqueológicas que tem como foco esse tipo de manifestação cultural deixada pelos antigos habitantes dessa região. O desinteresse por esse tipo de pesquisa é recente, visto que diversos trabalhos foram desenvolvidos no final do século XIX e início do século XX. A preocupação pelo estudo de outros vestígios arqueológicos na Amazônia, particularmente a cerâmica, gerou um grande vazio com relação à arte rupestre, tanto com relação as suas características técnicas e estilísticas, como em relação ao contexto arqueológico no qual está inserida.
Estudos recentes em diversos países Amazônicos têm contribuído para começar a mudar esse quadro. Essa sessão tem como objetivo apresentar um panorama atualizado das pesquisas realizadas na região abrindo o debate para temas como arte rupestre e seu contexto arqueológico, seqüências culturais e cronologia e etnografia, mitologia e a interpretação que é dada pelos habitantes atuais para a arte rupestre.
Esta sessão abre espaço também para a apresentação de inventários e para a discussão dos problemas advindos do turismo não organizado que vem ocorrendo em toda a região.
